Spiritual Significance
Ravi Yoga arises from the harmonious relationship between the Sun and the Moon, calculated by counting the position of the Moon nakshatra relative to the Sun. When the Moon occupies certain nakshatras as reckoned from the solar nakshatra, the resulting yoga is said to neutralize most ordinary doshas of the day, including weak tithis and difficult karanas. The principle behind this rule is that the radiance of Surya, when supported by a favorable lunar reflection, becomes capable of burning away the negative shadow of lesser inauspicious factors. Theologically the yoga reaffirms that the Sun is the visible Brahman, the eye of the world, and the deity to whom the most ancient hymns of the Veda are addressed. Practitioners of jyotisha view this yoga as a small window of grace within an otherwise mixed panchang, allowing important undertakings to proceed when scheduling pressure does not allow waiting for a perfect day.
How to Calculate
Identify the nakshatra in which the Sun is currently transiting from a printed or digital panchangam. Count the Moon nakshatra position from that of the Sun. If the Moon falls in nakshatra number four, six, nine, ten, thirteen, twentieth, or others recognized in the local tradition as Ravi Yoga positions, the yoga is said to be present during the period the Moon occupies that nakshatra. Different schools enumerate the qualifying nakshatras slightly differently, so consult a trusted regional panchang to confirm.
Modern Application
Today Ravi Yoga is commonly invoked when planners must choose a date for an important event but find that the immediate days carry small inauspicious notes such as a weak tithi or vyatipata. By aligning the event with Ravi Yoga, families perform housewarmings, vehicle purchases, school admissions, and new business openings without postponement. It is also valued for the inauguration of solar power installations and renewable energy projects, since the symbolic resonance with the deity of the sun is direct.
