Vyākaraṇa (व्याकरण) — literally "analysis" or "decomposition" — is the third of the six Vedangas and the discipline of grammar. Its purpose, within the Vedic system of learning, is to preserve and correctly transmit the language of the sacred texts: to identify which forms are correct, why they are correct, and how the parts of a word relate to one another. In practice, grew far beyond this initial purpose and produced what most modern linguists regard as the first scientific grammar of any language ever composed — Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī.
The Pre-Paninian Tradition
By Panini's time (roughly 5th–4th century BCE) the tradition was already old. The Nirukta of Yāska (Panini's predecessor) refers to earlier grammarians by name — Āpiśali, Kāśyapa, Gārgya, Gālava, and others — and to schools that had already developed sophisticated analyses of word-formation, case-marking, and verbal conjugation. None of these earlier works survive complete, but their concepts and terminology are preserved in the citations of later authors.
Panini's
The Aṣṭādhyāyī (अष्टाध्यायी) — "the eight-chaptered" — is Panini's grammar. In approximately 4,000 highly compressed sūtras (aphoristic rules), provides a complete generative description of classical Sanskrit. The work is one of the masterpieces of human intellectual history, comparable in its precision and economy to the works of Euclid and Aristotle.
Several features make the extraordinary:
- It is generative. does not list paradigms and forms. He provides ordered rules that, applied correctly to roots, produce the entire morphology of the language — analogous to the way a context-sensitive grammar in modern formal linguistics generates an infinite set of well-formed strings.
- It uses a meta-language. employs an artificial vocabulary of technical terms (saṃjñā) and operators (anubandha) of his own invention. The opening sūtra of the work, vṛddhir ādaic — "vṛddhi is ā, ai, au" — defines a technical term that will be used hundreds of times later in the text.
- It uses an ordering principle. Rules apply in a strictly defined sequence, and later rules can over-ride earlier ones in specified contexts. The system is rule-ordered in the same way that modern phonological and morphological derivations are.
- It is exhaustive. Panini's rules cover almost every form of Sanskrit. The Buddhist and Jain grammarians who later attempted alternative grammars (Candragomin, the Jainendra grammar, the Sarasvatī Kanthābharaṇa) all worked in continuous dialogue with .
The Three Sages
Indian tradition speaks of trimuni vyākaraṇa — the grammar of three sages: Pāṇini, his successor Kātyāyana (3rd century BCE), who composed vārttikas (supplements) commenting on and refining Panini's rules, and Patañjali (2nd century BCE), who composed the Mahābhāṣya — the "Great Commentary" — discussing Panini's sutras and Katyayana's vārttikas in elaborate philosophical detail. The Mahābhāṣya is itself a literary masterpiece, written in a lively dialogue style and treating philosophical, theological, and even social questions alongside the strictly grammatical.

In subsequent centuries became one of the great Indian intellectual disciplines, generating sophisticated philosophical traditions of its own. The most important is the Sphoṭa theory of Bhartṛhari (5th century CE), who in his Vākyapadīya argued that the meaning of a sentence is not assembled from the meanings of its individual words but bursts forth (sphuṭ) as a unified whole in the listener's mind. Bhartrihari's work is a foundational text in Indian philosophy of language and has been compared to Saussurean and post-structuralist linguistic theory.
Why Grammar Was a Vedanga
The traditional rationale for grammar's inclusion as a limb of the Veda is given succinctly in a verse attributed to Patanjali: raksā-ūha-āgama-laghv-asaṃdeha-prayojanam — grammar serves five purposes: the preservation of Vedic forms, adaptation of inflection in ritual recitation, extension of usage to new contexts, brevity in learning, and the removal of doubt about correct forms. Without grammar, the Veda would corrupt over generations; with grammar, it could be transmitted and even extended without error.
The Modern Discovery
When European scholars encountered in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, their astonishment was profound. The Sanskritist Sir William Jones and his successors recognized in the a level of analytical sophistication unmatched by any Western grammar before the 20th century. Leonard Bloomfield called Panini's grammar "one of the greatest monuments of human intelligence." The modern field of generative linguistics, beginning with Noam Chomsky in the 1950s, has openly acknowledged as an intellectual ancestor; the formal apparatus of generative grammar — rule ordering, recursive application, abstract underlying forms — closely parallels the architecture of the .
Living Tradition
remains a living subject of study in traditional Sanskrit pathshalas. The standard course of study includes the Siddhānta Kaumudī — a 17th-century reorganization of Panini's rules by topic, by Bhattoji Dikshita — which is studied as a multi-year discipline before the student takes up the itself. To master in this traditional sense remains, today as in Panini's time, one of the most demanding intellectual achievements possible within the Indian classical tradition.
