About Jaya Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadashi is the Shukla paksha Ekadashi of Magha, and its presiding deity is Vishnu. The word jaya means victory, which gives the day a different tone from the more penitential Ekadashis. It is sometimes grouped with other Magha observances in the cold season, and in several regions it is remembered as a day to ask for freedom from burdens carried over from the past.

The Padma Purana story concerns Malyavan and Pushpavati, a Gandharva singer and his companion, who were cursed by Indra after misbehaving at his court and became pishachas, restless spirits. Suffering in the cold of the Himalayan region, they ended up unknowingly fasting and staying awake through the night of this Ekadashi. As the story goes, the curse was lifted and they regained their celestial forms. The tale is summarised as a victory over a curse, which is the sense of the name.

Observance is simple and similar to other Vishnu fasts. Devotees avoid grains, offer tulsi and flowers, chant the Vishnu names, and may read the katha aloud before breaking the fast on the dvadashi morning. Some families dedicate the day to the memory of ancestors, though emphasis differs by community. Older people or those with medical conditions commonly use a milder fast of fruit and milk, and a doctor should be consulted when in doubt.
