About Papamochani Ekadashi
Papamochani Ekadashi is the Krishna paksha Ekadashi of Chaitra, and the presiding deity is Vishnu. It is often described as the last Ekadashi of the lunar year, since the new year begins with Chaitra Shukla, so the day naturally invites reflection and a sort of spiritual closing of accounts. The name breaks into papa, wrong deed, and mochani, one who releases.
In the Bhavishyottara Purana account, the sage Medhavi was distracted from his penance by the celestial dancer Manjughosha. He spent many years in her company, and when she finally left he realised how much of his practice he had lost. In remorse, he went to his father, the sage Chyavana, who advised him to keep this Ekadashi. The tale is usually read as a story about regret and return, not only about fault, and it is told sympathetically.
Devotees worship Vishnu with tulsi, avoid grains and beans, and may spend time in quiet prayer, charity or reading rather than elaborate ritual. Because the day falls just before the new year in many calendars, some households use it to reflect on promises left unkept and to resolve afresh. The parana is on the dvadashi morning. As spring heat starts to build, people who are older, pregnant or living with illness should adapt the fast and speak with a doctor instead of pushing through discomfort.
Common questions
- What does Papamochani mean?
- It means one who frees from wrongdoing. The day is associated with repentance, as in the story of sage Medhavi, rather than with any instant cleansing.
- Why is this called the last Ekadashi of the lunar year?
- In the traditional calendar the year turns at Chaitra Shukla, so this Krishna paksha Ekadashi is the final one before the new year begins. Some regional calendars count differently.
