About Putrada Ekadashi (Pausha)
Putrada Ekadashi of Pausha occurs in the Shukla paksha of Pausha and is one of two Ekadashis in the year that carry the name Putrada, the other being in Shravana. The presiding deity is Vishnu. In some regions, particularly in the south, this Pausha Shukla Ekadashi is also the one linked with the Vaikuntha Ekadashi celebrations at Vishnu temples, though local naming differs, so check your own tradition.
The Bhavishya Purana account tells of King Suketuman of Bhadrawati, who had no child and was troubled by the thought of who would carry his line and perform the rites for his ancestors. Sages advised him and his queen to keep this vrata. Putrada means giver of a son, and the tale has made the day popular with couples hoping for children, though the text should be read as devotional tradition rather than any assurance of result.
The observance follows the usual pattern. Devotees bathe early, worship Vishnu with tulsi and a lamp, avoid grains and beans, and stay awake with prayers if they are able. Some couples read the vrata katha together. The fast is broken after sunrise on the dvadashi. Families concerned about fertility or pregnancy often combine religious practice with proper medical care, and anyone who is pregnant, unwell or taking regular medicines should ask a doctor before fasting rather than skipping advice.
