About Ashvin
The month of Ashvin is named after Ashvini, the first nakshatra, near which the moon is full. Sharad, autumn, is its season: skies clear, the rains recede, and the weather cools into a pleasant stretch before winter. The kharif harvest approaches, so this time is felt as one of gratitude and gathering.
It is the month of Devi worship. Sharad Navratri runs through the first nine tithis of the bright fortnight and honours the goddess in her forms, remembering her battle with Mahishasura. Regions mark it differently: Garba and dandiya in Gujarat, Durga Puja pandals in Bengal, doll displays known as golu in parts of the south, and Ramlila performances in the north. Vijayadashami follows on the tenth and is linked to Rama's victory over Ravana and the goddess's triumph, depending on region. Sharad Purnima, the full moon, is said in tradition to be particularly luminous, and some families leave milk sweet rice in the moonlight. Karwa Chauth, a fast kept by wives on Krishna Chaturthi, falls on the fourth of the dark half in Purnimanta regions.
Padmanabha, a name of Vishnu, is assigned as presiding deity, and Tvashta is the Aditya. A caution on calendars: the Karwa Chauth and Pitru Paksha placements shift between Amanta and Purnimanta systems, so a festival in one almanac's Ashvin may sit in another's Bhadrapada or Kartika.
