About Jyeshtha
The name Jyeshtha comes from the nakshatra of the same name, the star group the moon is near at the month's full moon. Jyeshtha means eldest or most excellent. The season is Grishma, high summer, with dry heat across the plains and the first pre-monsoon winds still some weeks away. The cultural rhythm leans toward restraint, cooling offerings and giving away water.
Austerity suits the weather, and the major observances reflect that. Nirjala Ekadashi is a fast kept without even water, and tradition says a single observance of it carries the merit of the whole year's Ekadashis; it is demanding, so many people keep a modified version instead. Ganga Dashahara marks the river goddess's descent to earth on the tenth of the bright half, and pilgrims bathe at ghats from Haridwar to Varanasi. Vat Savitri Vrata is kept by married women who tie threads around a banyan tree, recalling Savitri's devotion to Satyavan. In Puri, the Snan Yatra is the public bathing of Jagannath on the full moon, shortly before the Rath Yatra season.
Trivikrama, a form of Vishnu associated with Vamana's three strides, is the month's presiding deity, and Vivasvan is its solar name. Regarding regional systems, Vat Savitri is observed on the full moon in some places and on the new moon in others, partly because Amanta and Purnimanta calendars place the month's boundaries differently.
Common questions
- When is Vat Savitri Vrata observed?
- Western and southern regions commonly keep it on the full moon, while parts of the north keep it on the new moon. The difference arises from the two month-ending conventions, so follow the practice of your own region.
- Is a waterless Nirjala fast required?
- It is a voluntary vow. Those who are elderly, unwell, pregnant or on medication usually keep a fruit or water-allowed version and should consult a doctor first.
- What links Jyeshtha to the river Ganga?
- Ganga Dashahara, on the tenth tithi of the bright half, commemorates the river's descent to earth in tradition, and people bathe and give alms on that day.
