About Naga Karana
Naga is the tenth karana and the third of the fixed group. The word means serpent, and the deity is Sarpa, the snake. Its position is the second half of Amavasya, the new moon tithi, immediately after Chatushpada, so the two sthira karanas together divide that single day between cattle and serpents.
Fixed karanas occur once a month and do not take part in the seven-part cycle that governs everyday karana changes, which gives Naga a special place in the panchang. It is rated inauspicious, with a note that Sarpa influence brings hidden dangers. That is why almanac tradition recommends avoiding marriage, travel, surgery, new ventures and property purchases in this period.
Where Naga does have a role is in serpent-related worship. Customary lists mention Naga puja, remedies for Kalsarpa dosha, Rahu-Ketu shanti and the rituals of Nag Panchami, and these are the activities for which the karana is considered suitable. The Kalsarpa idea is an astrological belief held by many but not all practitioners, so those who are unsure should seek the opinion of a trusted astrologer. None of this calls for fear, since it is a framework of old customs rather than a forecast.
