About Sukarma Yoga

Sukarma is the seventh of the twenty-seven yogas. Its name is formed from su, meaning good, and karma, meaning action, so it translates simply as good deed. Indra, the king of the devas, is its deity in most almanacs, and its nature is auspicious.

The meaning has made it a favourite among those planning acts of merit. Charity, religious rites, volunteer work, founding a charitable body and the offering of pind for ancestors are the occasions traditionally associated with it. There is a pleasing consistency in this: a day named for virtuous action is considered apt for virtuous action. Tradition adds a particular suggestion that giving at sunrise is especially fitting, which echoes the wider Indian custom of doing daan early in the day.

The caution attached to Sukarma is moral rather than practical. Selfish ventures are the stated item to avoid, which reads as an ethical nudge more than a technical rule. Do not read it as a literal claim that deeds multiply in effect; that is a poetic way of describing the intention behind the name. For timing, the yoga changes at a different moment each cycle, since it is derived from the combined motion of the sun and moon, so a reliable almanac for your city is the proper reference. Sitting between Atiganda and Dhriti, it is a bright stretch right after the first difficult yoga.
