About Vyatipata Yoga
Vyatipata is the seventeenth yoga and one of the few in the cycle whose entire span is treated as inauspicious. The name is usually explained as a great calamity or a deviation from the proper course. The deity is Rudra, the fierce aspect of Shiva, and the nature is labelled inauspicious.
The almanac tradition handles it in a distinctive way: it does not simply say do nothing. Instead it redirects the day toward ancestor rites. Pind daan, tarpan, pitr puja and mantra japa are listed as suitable, while marriage, travel, a new venture, surgery, house-warming and anything new are the things to avoid. The thought is that a period unsuited to beginnings may still serve for remembrance and for rites that look backward instead of forward.
Some traditional calendars give Vyatipata special attention as a time for shraddha-related observances, though practice differs by region, and nothing here should be read as a fixed rule. It is also commonly mentioned alongside Vaidhriti, the twenty-seventh yoga, since both carry the same whole-span caution and the same recommended uses. Only the order, name and deity set them apart. If you are an observer of ancestral rites, your family's own custom and local priest will give better direction than any general summary. For everyone else, it is simply a name in the almanac, marking one of the quieter or more careful intervals in the repeating cycle of twenty-seven.
