About Shuchindram
Shuchindram, near Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, is held to be the place where the upper teeth of Sati fell, according to tradition. The goddess is Narayani and the Bhairava is Sanhar. Teeth are not among the more commonly cited parts in all lists, and the Tantra Chudamani and Pithanirnaya may name other parts for the far south, so this is one of the attributions where care is needed.
The famous temple at Shuchindram is dedicated to Sthanumalayan, a combined form of Shiva (Sthanu), Vishnu (Mal) and Brahma (Ayan), which is itself an unusual union of the three gods in one shrine. The name Shuchindram is often explained through a legend involving Indra being purified here, since suchi means pure, though this is a regional etymology. The place is famous for its tall gateway and for sculptural halls, but the Devi aspect of the temple site is linked with Narayani.
Narayani is a name of the goddess as the sister or Shakti of Narayana, and she is among the Matrikas, the divine mothers. Tamil Shakta devotion is often expressed through the many Amman shrines of the villages, while the Sanskritic peeth tradition gives the south a few named seats of its own, like this one and the nearby Kanyakumari. The Daksha yajna story is the same, but the regional setting turns the narrative into a southern Tamil devotional landscape.
