About Panchami
Panchami is the fifth lunar day. Counting twelve degrees of moon-sun separation per tithi, it is the span that ends when the moon has drawn about sixty degrees from the sun. The fifth is traditionally the first tithi of the purna group, which means fullness, and it shares that group with the tenth and fifteenth.
Two quite different presences are linked with it. The first is the family of Nagas, the serpent deities honoured in every corner of the subcontinent; the second is Saraswati, patron of learning and the arts, whose day in the year is the spring Panchami. This double identity explains the tithi's reach: farmers and village shrines know it for snakes, while students and musicians know it for Saraswati.
Naga observances usually involve offering milk at a shrine or anthill and, in some places, avoiding digging or frying, so as not to harm creatures. Saraswati's day is marked with yellow clothes and books placed before the goddess. The bright half carries the larger festivals; the dark half is more often a day for serpent-related protective prayer. Customs vary by region, so treat these as general traditions.
Common questions
- Why is Panchami linked to both snakes and Saraswati?
- Different traditions assigned the day to different deities. Naga Panchami comes from serpent worship, while Vasant Panchami honours Saraswati; both fall on the fifth tithi.
- What does purna mean here?
- Purna means full or complete. Tithis five, ten and fifteen are placed in this class and are generally viewed as productive.
- Do people really avoid cooking on Naga Panchami?
- Some communities avoid frying and digging that day as a gesture of care for snakes. It is a regional custom, not a universal requirement.
