About Saptami

Saptami is the seventh lunar day, counted at about eighty-four degrees of separation between moon and sun. Roughly a week into each fortnight, it marks the point at which the cycle has passed its first quarter, so there is an easy association between this tithi and steady, growing light.

It is classed as bhadra, the auspicious group shared with the second and twelfth days, and its deity is Surya, the sun god. That pairing is natural: Surya is the visible deity whose daily rising anyone can see, and his worship is regularly tied to health, vigour and clear sight. The Aditya Hridayam hymn and the practice of offering water to the rising sun belong to the same current of devotion.

The best-known Saptami is the one in the month of Magha, when Surya's chariot, drawn by seven horses, is said to turn northward. Observance centres on an early bath, a water offering from a copper vessel and a modest meal. The Saptami of the waning half is generally described as milder, with health-related prayer rather than festival. Sunday occurrences are often given extra weight. As ever, customs vary by region.

Common questions

Why is Saptami connected to the sun god?
Tradition links Surya with the seventh tithi, and his chariot is said to have seven horses. The number is part of why the day is dedicated to him.
What is bhadra?
Bhadra means auspicious or kind. Saptami shares the label with the second and twelfth tithis.
Is a fast required on Saptami?
Not as a general rule. Some people fast or eat lightly for Ratha Saptami, but many simply bathe early and make an offering to the sun.
