About Trayodashi

Trayodashi is the thirteenth lunar day, counted when the moon is close to a hundred and fifty-six degrees from the sun. It sits one step before the fourteenth and fifteenth, so in the bright half the moon is almost full, and in the dark half it is nearly gone.

It is a jaya tithi, one of the victory days along with the third and eighth, and it belongs to Shiva. The signature observance is Pradosh, the vow of worshipping Shiva in the twilight window around sunset. Traditional stories say that the gods gathered to worship Shiva at such an hour, and for that reason many believers keep the evening hours for abhishekam, bilva leaves and the chanting of his name.

Since Trayodashi occurs in both fortnights, two Pradosh days occur per month. Calendars give them names according to the weekday: a Monday one is called Soma Pradosh and a Saturday one is called Shani Pradosh. Dhanteras, which opens the Diwali days, also lands on a dark-half Trayodashi, and it is a time for buying metal and lighting lamps. Observances vary, and people with health needs are usually advised to fast moderately.

Common questions

What is Pradosh vrat?
It is a Shiva vow observed on Trayodashi, with worship timed to the twilight hours around sunset. It is kept twice a month.
Does the weekday matter?
Many calendars name the day by the weekday, such as Soma or Shani Pradosh, and some devotees give those extra weight, though the basic vow is the same.
Why is Dhanteras on Trayodashi?
Dhanteras is the first of the Diwali days and falls on the dark-half Trayodashi of Kartik. The festival is fixed to the tithi in the lunar calendar.
