Best Time for Griha Pravesh (Housewarming): Traditional Guidelines

Griha Pravesh is the ceremony of entering a new home for the first time. Because it marks the start of a household's life in a space, the Hindu tradition places weight on choosing a suitable time (muhurta). This guide summarises the commonly cited guidelines; the exact date for your family should be confirmed with a local priest or from a panchang for your city.

Types of Griha Pravesh

  • Apoorva: entering a newly built or never-lived-in house.
  • Sapoorva: re-entering a house after a long absence.
  • Dwandwa: re-entering after a disruption such as damage or repair.

The ritual and the timing considerations differ a little between them.

Months generally preferred

Classical texts commonly name Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha as favourable months. Some traditions add Margashirsha and Kartika in certain regions. Months that are generally avoided include Pausha, Chaitra and Ashadha in some systems, and the period of Chaturmas (roughly from Devshayani Ekadashi to Prabodhini Ekadashi). An Adhik Maas (extra month) is also avoided for new beginnings, and so is Pitru Paksha. Opinions differ between regions, so treat this as a starting list, not a final answer.

Weekdays, tithis and nakshatras

  • Weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are commonly cited as suitable; Tuesday and Saturday are often avoided.
  • Tithis: the second, third, fifth, seventh, tenth, eleventh and thirteenth tithis of the bright fortnight are commonly listed.
  • Nakshatras: lists usually include Rohini, Mrigashira, the three Uttaras, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha and Revati.

Because the lists vary by text and region, a priest will cross-check the full panchang, including the lagna, before fixing the time.

Practical preparation

  1. Clean the house and arrange the kalash and puja space.
  2. Fix the date and time with your priest from the panchang for your city.
  3. Enter with the right foot forward, carrying the kalash or the deity image, and boil milk in the kitchen as a symbol of abundance (a widely followed custom).
  4. Perform Ganesh puja, Vastu puja and, if your family follows it, Satyanarayan katha, and share prasad.

How to use the panchang

Open the panchang for your city and look at the tithi, nakshatra and the sunrise and sunset times. The muhurat guide explains how the timing is chosen.

Frequently asked questions

Can we move in first and do the ceremony later? Families differ. Many perform the pravesh at the chosen muhurta before moving belongings; ask your priest.

Is the ceremony required? It is a customary rite, not a legal one. Follow your family's tradition.
