Spiritual Significance
Aparahna means later-half-day. Classical Hindu calendar divides daylight into five parts; the afternoon segment three hours after noon is considered the time when the pitru-loka (ancestor realm) is most receptive to offerings from descendants. All shraddha karma is mandated by Manusmriti and Yajnavalkya Smriti to occur during aparahna for the offering to actually reach the ancestors.
How to Calculate
Per local solar noon, count 3-5 hours forward. Apps display per-city. Pitru Paksha (Bhadrapad Krishna Paksha, ~Sep-Oct) is the most active 16-day window. Within each day of Pitru Paksha, the aparahna kal is when the family priest conducts the tarpana ceremony.
