Saubhagya Yoga

Saubhagya is the fourth of the twenty-seven yogas that make up the panchang's yoga limb. Its name comes from the word for good fortune and, in older usage, for the happy state of a married woman, which explains why it is so often mentioned in connection with weddings. The presiding deity is Brahma, and the nature is recorded as auspicious.

Almanac users historically treat Saubhagya as a general-purpose favourable yoga. Marriage, the purchase of gold or jewellery, a new vehicle, a house-entering ceremony and a child's first solid food are all listed among its suitable occasions. The picture is of a day that supports acquisitions and domestic milestones. Surgery and signing a loan are traditionally listed among the things better left for another time, apparently because they carry a note of risk or burden rather than celebration.

How it is computed is the same as for every nitya yoga: the sum of the sun's and moon's longitudes is measured in slices of thirteen degrees twenty minutes. That means the span of Saubhagya wanders through the weekdays and tithis from one month to the next. Because it meets different planetary days each time, the same yoga can feel quite different in a given almanac, and priests of different regions weigh it against other factors. It is best read as one input among several, not as a standalone verdict.
