About Vidyarambha
Vidyarambha is the tenth samskara, the beginning of learning. The name means the start of vidya, knowledge, and it opens the student stage in the life-cycle sequence. Tradition places it in the fifth year, when a child writes the first letters under a teacher's hand, with the intent that the habit of study begins in a spirit of reverence and not as a chore.
The outline is gentle. After a prayer to Ganesha and to Saraswati, the goddess of learning, the guru or teacher guides the child's finger across a tray of rice or sand to write Om, or an invocation such as Hari Sri Ganapataye Namah. Using rice or sand means the letters can be smoothed and written again, and the guide's hand symbolises the pupil's reliance on a teacher. Different regions use different first words, and some write them with a gold ring on the tongue.
Kerala keeps the custom especially visibly. There it is called Vidyarambham, and on Vijayadashami many temples and schools host thousands of young children for their first letters. Elsewhere, families may do it on Vasant Panchami or at home on a convenient day, and the teacher may be a grandparent. Modern nursery admissions have not displaced it. It sits comfortably beside school, since it is a blessing for learning rather than a formal enrolment.
