About Markandeya Purana
The Markandeya Purana is counted among the older Mahapuranas and is traditionally put at about nine thousand verses. Tradition places it among the rajasic group, with the Devi as its presiding figure. In its opening, the sage Markandeya answers the questions of Jaimini through four wise birds, a framing that gives the early chapters a distinctive character.
Its fame rests on the Devi Mahatmya, the seven-hundred-verse hymn to the Goddess that forms a section of the text. In it Durga defeats Mahishasura and the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. Known also as the Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path, this portion is recited during Navaratri and treated as the foundation text of Shakta tradition. The Purana also preserves the teachings of Madalasa on detachment.
Most people meet the Markandeya Purana through the Chandi Path, which devotees read from separate editions with the Goddess hymns, while scholars study the whole work for its early narratives. It is often read alongside the Devi Bhagavata and the Lalita texts.
