About Vishnu Purana

Many teachers hold the Vishnu Purana to be the most orderly of the eighteen Mahapuranas. It is arranged in six amshas and is traditionally counted at about twenty-three thousand verses. It follows the five marks that the Puranic genre claims for itself: creation, secondary creation, genealogies, the ages of the Manus, and the histories of dynasties. Its presiding deity is Vishnu, and tradition places it in the sattvic group.

Within its pages sit some of the best-loved stories of devotion. The austerities of the child Dhruva and the steadfastness of Prahlada against his father Hiranyakashipu are told here, and the lives of the solar and lunar royal lines are laid out at length. Krishna's childhood appears in brief form, a theme the Bhagavata Purana later expanded far more fully.

Because of its tidy structure it is often the first Purana a student reads, and it is quoted by Vaishnava philosophers who rely on it for scriptural support. Families and scholars study it in Sanskrit with commentary or in translation, usually alongside the Bhagavata Purana and the Mahabharata.

Common questions

Why is the Vishnu Purana called a model Purana?
It keeps closely to the five traditional marks of the genre and is arranged in a clear sequence, so many readers treat it as the pattern the other Puranas follow.
Which stories is the Vishnu Purana known for?
It tells of Dhruva's austerities, of Prahlada and Hiranyakashipu, and of the solar and lunar dynasties. Krishna's early life appears too, though more briefly than in the Bhagavata.
