About Skanda Purana

The Skanda Purana is the largest of the Puranas and is traditionally counted at more than eighty thousand verses. It is named for Skanda, the son of Shiva, and tradition places it among the tamasic, Shiva-leaning group. Its seven khandas are the Maheshvara, Vaishnava, Brahma, Kashi, Avantya, Nagara and Prabhasa, and each holds many mahatmyas, or praises of holy places.

Several of those sections are famous in their own right. The Kashi Khanda extols Varanasi, the Setu Mahatmya treats Rameshwaram, the Kumarika Khanda is linked with Kanyakumari, and the Avanti Khanda deals with Ujjain. The story of Skanda defeating the demon Tarakasura also belongs here. Many local temple histories, called sthala-puranas, claim descent from this vast text.

Pilgrims and temple communities across India cite it when they speak of the history of their shrine, and scholars study it to understand how regional traditions were gathered into a pan-Indian frame. Because of its size it is rarely read whole, and individual khandas circulate as separate books.
